A list of answers to frequently asked questions is given below:

How much is the damage?

24 dairies and maturing facilities have been damaged by the earthquake shocks on May 20 and 29.  The earthquake shocks of May 29 caused the collapse of cheese wheels in 4 facilities in the Province of Mantua, 2 in the Province of Modena, 6 in the Province of Reggio Emilia; 1 dairy in the Province of Mantua and 3 dairies in the Province of Modena suffered damage affecting their fitness for use. The cheese wheels involved by the earthquake on May 29 are 311 thousand, taking the total number of wheels affected by the earthquake to more than 600,000 thousand (of which about 330,000 were damaged, amounting to 10% of total production).
Operations are underway to salvage cheese wheels that collapsed. Cheese wheels that can continue their maturation to become Parmigiano-Reggiano are being transferred to other facilities equipped for the purpose.  Cheese wheels that have fractures or cracks are being transferred to refrigerated warehouses, waiting for the appropriate use to be set (as generic cheese, melted cheese).
This latter cheese won't be sold as Parmigiano-Reggiano in usual retail channels, as it doesn't comply with the PDO standards.

Is there such a thing as Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese "hit by the earthquake"?

No, there isn't. Facilities can be affected by the earthquake.  The cheese with the Parmigiano-Reggiano marks complies with all the procedures set for PDO, is subject to strict certification controls and is absolutely safe and good.

Do you expect difficulties in Parmigiano-Reggiano supply on the market?

No, we don't. As always, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese is produced in compliance with the strict PDO production regulation, is marked by the Consortium and certified by the control body. The name "Parmigiano-Reggiano", the wheel-and-wedge black logo, the round red-and-yellow EU logo all guarantee that the product, whether in wedges or grated, is authentic Parmigiano-Reggiano.
