The Consortium for Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese welcomes the approval by the Government of the long-awaited Sanctioning Decree

Reggio Emilia, 19 July 2004 – The Consortium for Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese expresses great satisfaction for the decision made by the Council of Ministers on Friday, 16 July, approving the Decree that establishes the sanctions applying to the breach of the norms governing D.P.O. and I.G.P. standards.

“I would like to express my great satisfaction – declares Andrea Bonati, President of the Consortium for Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese – for the publication of this long-awaited Decree that will contribute to clarify the background for the application of D.P.O. rules. I would like to thank Minister Alemanno for the efforts made during the decisive phase with a provision that will finally fill in serious normative gaps. The implementation of the D.P.O. system has obtained a fundamental element that will enable Consortiums and other supervisory bodies to act more effectively for protection of consumers. Seventy years after its establishment, the Consortium and the entire Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese production system receives new stimuli to carry on its way of rigour taken from its early days in 1934. This will be the only way to guarantee to consumers the qualitative excellence of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, which is based on the respect of strict production standards that require both an attentive control system and a fair and effective set of sanctions”.
