Reggio Emilia, Italy, 19 April 2013 - Giuseppe Alai was confirmed to office as President of the Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese Consortium.

Alai, 56, farmer, has thus begun his third term of office as the President of the Protection Consortium; Adolfo Filippini, from Modena, was confirmed to office as Vice-President (and confirmed to office as Deputy); Pietro Maria Gattoni (Chair of the Mantua Province Section) and Monica Venturini, farmer from Parma, were also appointed to office as Vice-Presidents.

As well as the President and Vice-Presidents, the new Executive Committee of the Consortium includes Andrea Bonati (Chair of the Parma Province Section), Graziano Salsi (Chair of the Reggio Emilia Province Section), Aldemiro Bertolini (Chair of the Modena Province Section), Angelo Romagnoli (Chair of the Bologna Province Section), Alessandro Bezzi and Mario Gualazzi.

Alai, who is also the Chairperson of the Banca Reggiana Cooperative Bank, of Reggio Emilia Confcooperative (Association of Cooperatives) and Deputy Chairperson of the Association of Cooperatives of the Emilia-Romagna Region, will be in office, as the other Directors of the Consortium, until 2017.

"Four years of work - said Alai - substantiating continuity of strategies that have as top priorities an effective management of production flows (which decreased by 2.1% in the first quarter of 2013), further investment in export (which is expected to increase by between 6 and 7% in 2013), use of the new tools acquired to interact with the market (including the I4S Company, which has forecast that 84.000 cheese wheels will be sold in new foreign markets in 2013), closer relations with the Large Retail System, the launch of new products with Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese as their main ingredient, development of the Horeca channel (hotels, restaurants, coffee bars and catering sectors) and the vending channel, since vending machines have become more and more common in many work places".

"A set of strategies - continued Alai - that are designed to implement a focused market-oriented approach and stronger relations with consumers, which go beyond communication of the product distinctive values and proactively involve all players in the production chain to enhance such distinctiveness to translate it into more secure and stable income for producers. This is a target that must be pursued together by the Consortium and all producers' organizations".
